SIC Looks to Expand Safety Training - Board Meeting Highlights

The SIC Board discussed concealed carry safety training at their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
SIC has provided the Utah concealed carry training for some time now and given the new Illinois concealed carry legislation, there are important educational training opportunities for the College.
SIC will soon provide training opportunities that will comply with Illinois law. Details will be provided to the public soon once all compliance issues have been engaged.

Curtis Rowlen was recognized as the September Employee Spotlight. Rowlen has served for 10 years as a carpentry and building trades instructor at SIC.
The board passed a resolution adopting the Fiscal Year 2014 budget. The budget is tight but in the black.
“It’s a testament to the sacrifice, hard work and financial planning that we’ve engaged,” said Rice.
“Southeastern must continue to remain fiscally sound, which we are now and will continue to be. That is paramount to fulfilling our mission.”
The board also adopted a drug testing policy for student athletes, which covers any illegal substances as well as alcohol consumption for underage athletes. A first offense would result in suspension from 25% of remaining games, but no loss of aid. A second offense would be a suspension of 50% of remaining games, plus loss of aid, and a third offense would result in suspension from the team for the rest of the season.
Fundraising activities continue for the American Heart Association (AHA) Heartwalk, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5. Faculty “celebrity waiters” will work at Ponderosa on Thursday, Sept.26, 5-7 p.m. with 10 percent of proceeds and all tips going to the AHA. Also, a “Relax ‘til your Heart’s Content” basket will be raffled on campus on Oct. 3 for the Heartwalk Event.
The board accepted the resignations of Melody Bond as part-time Small Business Consultant, Amy Daugherty as part-time Saline County Chamber Assistant, and Amy Vaughn as part-time Food Service Assistant. The board approved the transfer of David Wright from Controller to Interim Chief Financial Officer. The board approved the employment of Terrah Oldham as full-time Financial Aid Specialist, and Jim Butler as part-time CTE Liaison and Transition Coordinator.
The board also ratified contracts with the UMWA and Laborers’ bargaining units which represent the classified and custodial staff.
