John Gunning | Fire Training Coordinator | 13 Years at SIC
- Graduate of Harrisburg High School
- SIC Fire Service Certification
- University of Illinois Fire Academy - Fire Service Management
Have you held other positions at SIC?
Started with teaching the Fire Science program and expanded into the Fire Brigade Training for miners.
What position(s) did you hold prior to SIC?
I have 25 years as a career firefighter with the city of Harrisburg, and 21 years as a shift captain on the Dept. University of Ill. Fire Academy Instructor.
What does SIC means to you?
SIC has been a very positive step to start your career path. The knowledge and training the students receive by the staff is overwhelming. I would recommend any student to start their career path at SIC.
What is your favorite memory at SIC?
Adding the mine training to the Fire Science program. Working hand-in-hand with each new student either being in the fire science or a miner needing training. When they say we are the best, that makes it all worthwhile.
What do you do in your spare time?
Travel the country with the boys motocross racing, scuba diving, golfing, and working at home and having my granddaughter, Emmery.
Where’s your favorite vacation spot?
Panama City Beach, FL.
How would you spend $1 million?
I would make sure my family was taken care of first. Then buy a house in Florida and retire as a beach bum.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever heard?
The advice my father gave me years ago. Always show respect to everyone no matter what they do or who they are. Treat people like you want to be treated. These two pieces of advice will travel with you the rest of your life.
What's the best piece of advice you can give to others?
Set goals for yourself and push to reach your goals. One other quote of advice is “As you are standing on the ground, never stop reaching for the stars.”
