Southern Illinois Workwear and Outdoor Center

Gerrett Joiner, owner and operator of Southern Illinois Workwear and Outdoor Center, developed the company in January 2001. Gerrett consulted the Workforce and Illinois Small Business Development Center (WISBDC) to help with the start-up of his business. Gerrett states that “People need a desire to start a small business and listen to the WISBDC counselors’ advice.” He went on to say “that everyone needs counseling if they are borrowing money and a solid business plan initiates a good rapport with your banking facility.” That’s where the WISBDC’s guidance helped him. Gerrett said that everything that the counselors told him was true. He visited the office several times in order to make sure the business plan was totally prepared to present to the bank. The Workforce and Illinois Small Business Development Center has met with several clients that were referred by Gerrett. After an expansion in 2008, Southern Illinois Workwear and Outdoor Center was selected as the Small Business of the year by the WISBDC and Gerrett was very appreciative that his business was chosen for this honor. With a recent expansion of the embroidery center portion of the business in May 2011, the company now has 10,000 sq. ft. of market space. The company began with 1700 sq. ft. of market space in 2001. Joiner said, “There’s no better place to go for information on starting a small business than the WISBDC and the education that you receive from the counselors is exceptional. I could never have put a business plan together without their help.” The Workforce & Illinois Small Business Development Center is designed to assist owners and managers of small businesses or anyone wanting to start a business. Many of the services of the Center are available at no charge. Call (618) 252-5001 to learn about upcoming events and training opportunities.
