Mike Vargo
Harrisburg native Mike Vargo was a member of both the Falcon baseball and basketball teams from 1968-1970. His basketball play earned him All-Conference and All-Region honors, as well as Region Co-MVP status. Vargo transferred to McKendree College, playing from 1970-1972.
At McKendree, he was named First Team All-Midwest his first year. He was also a two-time MVP and two-time All-American. Mike holds the record for points per game average (26.0 ppg) set during the 1970-71 season and the record for rebounds per game average (13.3 rpg) also set during the 1970-71 season. He scored 1,404 total career points at McKendree.
After graduating from McKendree, Vargo began his 33-year career in education. For 26 years he taught junior high English and physical education at Ridgway and Gallatin County schools. In 1998, Mike became principal of the Gallatin County High School.
Becoming a Southeastern Illinois College success story is a family tradition. “My sons both graduated from SIC. Eric is a teacher at the Earl C. Clements Job Corps. Adam is a medical doctor doing his residency in Scottsdale, Arizona,” Vargo said. Vargo and his wife, Robbie, reside in Harrisburg.
