Providing an On-Campus or Online Bachelor’s Degree
A memorandum of understanding exists between Southeastern Illinois College and Mid-Continent University, a four-year fully accredited university with the main campus in Western Kentucky. This degree program allows students to transfer their associate’s degree, or as many as 80 hours, to apply toward their bachelor’s degree. Students who have an Associate of Science or Associate of Arts will have met all the general education requirements. Southeastern provides a classroom for evening instruction.
The Bachelor’s degree offered is in Business Management. Mid-Continent University ADVANTAGE is an accelerated degree completion program to meet the needs of working adults who are 24 years of age or older and have an associate degree or two years of college. Classes meet one night a week from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. for approximately 18 months of instruction. The professors hold masters or doctoral level degrees. This innovative format allows adults to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in a shorter period of time. Tested principles of adult learning theory are incorporated to make all classes stimulating, relevant, challenging, and rewarding.
A student can obtain credit through several avenues. One avenue of specific interest to adults is prior on-the-job training. Adults can pursue college credit by documenting college level learning obtained through work-place training, military training, and/or past life experiences.
The group stays together with a different professor for each module. The professors facilitate discussion, providing adult learners the opportunity to ask questions, state opinions, and share ideas from their own experiences. Each of the sixteen instructional modules meet for five weeks and includes various courses, including organizational communication, management, finance, business law, marketing, human resources, and ethics.
The agreement between Southeastern Illinois College and Mid-Continent University represents a unique opportunity for the non-traditional student to work full-time and complete a degree. This is just another example of the progressive approach to learning SIC is using to accommodate adult students in the Southern Illinois area.
