Oil and Natural Gas Program


Associate of Applied Sciences Certificate

Want to get a jump-start on a career in oil and natural gas?

Southeastern Illinois College’s new Oil and Natural Gas certificate program helps to prepare entry-level workers for oil and natural gas exploration throughout the southern Illinois region, as well as provide safety training for those currently working in the industry and related services.

Entry-level positions in Oil and Natural Gas exploration and production typically require these basic qualifications:

  • Ability to maintain a safe driving record and the ability to comply with D.O.T. regulations and health requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work efficiently in teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to perform duties in various, sometimes harsh outdoor weather conditions.
Coal Mining

Southeastern’s certificate program can help to prepare workers for the following entry-level positions in the Oil and Natural Gas industry:

  • Derrickhand
  • Equipment Operator
  • Floorhand
  • Roustabout

SIC also provides educational programs and training in related jobs and careers with the Oil and Natural Gas industry, including:

SAFELAND™ Training is offered as part of the program curriculum, as well as stand-alone workforce training classes for those already working in the industry.  The training emphasizes safety in the job and on the site, and can range from an eight to 24 hours depending upon the needs of the business.
