Fire Science

Be a hero by becoming a trained firefighter!

If you enjoy a challenge, work well on a team and want to make a difference in the community in which you live, firefighting could be the job for you! Often hailed as modern-day heroes, firefighters are usually the first ones on the scene of an emergency, whether it's a house fire, commercial building fire, car accident or natural disaster. And Southeastern's Fire Science program prepares students to work in this important field by giving them the skills they need to succeed! In 2003, the college established a Fire Science Training Center on its campus with the cooperation of the University of Illinois (U of I) Illinois Fire Science Institute (IFSI) which offers ongoing education to fire fighters across the region. Since its opening, the center has trained active firefighters in some of the most important aspects of fire operations.

BASIC FIREFIGHTING CERTIFICATE
For students interested in getting a jump start on

their career as a firefighter, the college offers the Basic Fire Fighting certificate. This 12 credit-hour certificate takes students through the fundamentals of firefighting, including an overview of current fire science techniques, fire department organization and fire support operations. And, if students choose to pursue additional education, all of these classes can be applied toward the associate in applied science (AAS) degree in Fire Science at Southeastern.

FIRE SCIENCE AAS DEGREE
The AAS degree advances students' understanding of firefighting through important classes such as Fire Prevention Principles, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic, Apparatus Engineer, Fire Management I and II and Roadway Extrication. Students who complete this two-year degree are well prepared to sit for the EMT-Basic exam, as well as the Firefighter II licensure exam, both a condition of employment for almost all fire departments in the nation.

CORNERSTONE TRAINING
Southeastern understands that education is key to advancing one's career as a firefighter. For that reason, the college has teamed with IFSI to offer many FREE courses to firefighters, officers, rescue personnel and command staff. These classes are awarded college credit and can be applied toward the AAS degree at SIC. They are held on-site at SIC's Fire Science Training Center and include:
